DOWNTOWN. Dinosaurs, marine creatures, and animals native to Africa and the Nevadan Mojave desert are highlighted at this family-friendly museum. Through exhibits, educational programs, and a permanent collection, the museum teaches visitors about the complex relationship between humans and the ecosystem. Live animals and taxidermy displays amaze and entertain, and the hands-on gallery lets kids dig for fossils and observe animal tracks. The museum also offers continually changing weekend programs.

EAST OF THE STRIP. This university museum maintains a number of collections that document the area's past and present environments and peoples. Native American art and objects are displayed prominently, along with items that elucidate various Mesoamerican cultures. In addition, the museum features insect and bird collections, not to mention amphibian and reptile holdings ­ some are even shown live in the lobby! In the past, the museum has shown exhibits that trace the transformation of Las Vegas from desert town to gambling mecca and that showcase vanishing species.

NORTHWEST LAS VEGAS. Located in Lorenzi Park, one of the oldest parks in Las Vegas, the Nevada State Museum is home to a variety of permanent and changing exhibits including subjects from the Earth sciences to biological and natural history. There is also a "virtual exhibit" where visitors can get a glimpse of Nevada's history and its progress into the present. The Nevada State Historical Society is headquartered here to answer all your queries about the region's past.
